POSITION TITLE:     Counselor, College & Career 

 

REPORTS TO:            High School Building Principal and Director of Student Services

 

POSITION GOAL: To assist students to understand themselves, to achieve to their capacity, and to make appropriate post secondary decisions through personal, educational and precollege counseling and guidance services.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Build and maintain professional and personal relationships within the college admission community.
  • Maintain involvement in professional organizations to enhance networking and professional development.
  • Coordinate campus visits with college representatives coming to Wissahickon High School.
  • Provide precollege counseling with students and parents individually and in groups, as necessary in the development of plans for post-secondary success.
  • Assist students in relating their abilities, aptitudes, and interests to current and future educational and occupational choices.
  • Assist students and parents in understanding the techniques and strategies of educational exploration in the college admission process.
  • Provide college-related classroom instruction.
  • Introduce students to the wide array of educational environments and opportunities that exist.
  • Provide information regarding PSATs/SATs admissions/test dates/locations.
  • Assist in orientation of incoming classes regarding the college application process and post-secondary education planning.
  • Provide information and assist students and parents in such area as: college entrance requirements, financial aid, costs, admission and financial aid deadlines, curricular offerings and admission programs.
  • Develop and disseminate a school profile for use by colleges and universities.
  • Develop and maintain specific webpage college information on the WSD/Guidance site.
  • Plan and execute a series of college and financial aid information sessions for students
  • and parents.
  • Facilitate the organization of applications for admission to post-secondary institutions.
  • Maintain appropriate confidentiality of all students-related information or data as well as building/district specific information.
  • Collaborate with the transition coordinator and the alpha counselor on transitional requirements regarding the college process and post-secondary education planning.
  • Research and familiarize post-secondary programs for students with moderate to severe cognitive abilities.
  • Demonstrates professionalism and adheres to the Professional Code of Conduct.
  • Works additional days as per CBA.
  • Follows established policies and procedures for reporting incidents (e.g., child abuse, substance abuse, harassment, and violence).
  • Other duties as assigned by the Building Principal and/or Administration.

      The School Counselor shall possess the following:

  1. Master’s degree from an accredited college or university required.
  2. Valid PA Department of Education Certificate in appropriate area.
  3. Strong skill set in human relations, communications, problem solving and organization.
